Growing up in Wisconsin, Jessica Szohr never thought she’d be a famous New Yorker. But the 25-year-old actress, who plays alt-Brooklynite Vanessa in “Gossip Girl,” can’t walk a block in the Meatpacking District without being hounded by fans. When she’s not being followed by admirers, Szohr is swimming from carnivorous prehistoric fish. Her movie “Piranha 3D” hits theaters Friday.

To film “Piranha 3D” you must have spent a lot of time in a lake. Are you a good swimmer?
I can save myself, but I’m not the best swimmer. I’m from Wisconsin, and I love snowboarding, hiking, yoga and soccer. I love going to the beach and laying out, but I’m always like, “What’s underneath me? What’s going to happen?” Lakes are very eerie, because you can’t see what’s underneath the water, especially when you’re filming at two in the morning. There were times when I was really freaking scared. I didn’t know what was going on; it was dark and cold.

You weren’t in the water with real piranhas, so what did the director do to imitate the fish?
There were times when the fish were grabbing me and so they put people with green gloves on underneath the water and had them grab at my ankles. They were actually really grabbing me. There’s also a scene where I’m in a boat that’s sinking and I have to fight these piranhas off with a frying pan. A couple of stunt guys shot water guns at me so I knew where to aim with the pan.

For your role in “Gossip Girl,” did you have to study up on the cultural significance of different New York neighborhoods?
When I booked the job, I called a couple of friends and I was like, “There’s no way that people live like this on the upper East Side.” And they were like, “It’s really not that far off.” Vanessa’s pretty much the most relatable on the show because she’s the girl that doesn’t come from a ton of money. She has to work a normal job to try to get through school. There’s a very small percentage of people in New York City that live the upper East Side lifestyle, so for kids that live outside of the city, she’s kind of the most relatable in that way. That’s the kind of girl that would have gone to my high school.

So what does Jessica Szohr look for in a guy?
A big thing for me is a sense of humor. And he has to have a really cool sense of style.
The sexiest thing about style is if you kind of just take your personality and put it in what you wear. That’s what I think is cool. I like a little grunge, a little funky but that’s less important than making me laugh.

What’s a big no-no on a first date?
Someone once said, “Is it okay if I lean in and kiss you?” I’m like, Okay, that’s very gentlemanly but I don’t even know if I feel like kissing you. It’s the first date, did you really ask me for a kiss? Isn’t that supposed to be something that just happens? It’s nice to ask, but it’s a little awkward. Also I think it’s really rude and tacky to be on your phone the whole time when you’re getting to know someone. Just don’t pull out your phone at all on the first date.

When you fly back into New York, where’s the first place you go?
There’s a really cool restaurant called Tia Pol in Chelsea that’s really good and serves tapas. I get the artichoke salad and the deviled eggs, which are phenomenal. They also have these potatoes that have creamy sauce all over them and this bread with olives and red peppers.

You’re a big football fan. So now that you spend so much time in New York, are you a Jets or a Giants fan?
Neither. I’m a huge Green Bay Packers fan. You can’t grow up in Wisconsin if you are not. If I had to choose, though, I would pick the Giants because Brett Favre played for the Jets and watching my hero play for another team was the worst thing in the world.

While taking a break from playing Brooklyn-based, sometime back-stabber Vanessa on Gossip Girl, Jessica Szohr filmed the 3-D horror-fish film Piranha 3D, which sounds amazing, awful, or both all at once. Though real piranhas were not used on the set, the actress says filming had its own dangers: “There were times when fish were grabbing me and so they put people with green gloves on underneath the water and had them grab at my ankles. They were actually really grabbing me. There’s also a scene where I’m in a boat that’s sinking and I have to fight these piranhas off with a frying pan. A couple of stunt guys shot water guns at me so I knew where to aim with the pan.” She did not, in fact, use a stunt double for this.

Representatives for on/off couple Ed Westwick and Jessica Szohr have slammed claims the pair failed to show up to a promotional event, insisting the actors never knew they were scheduled to attend.

The “Gossip Girl” lovers were staying at the Hard Rock Hotel in Chicago over the weekend, where they were reportedly lined up for a public appearance.

Organizers claim they paid for Westwick and Szohr’s flights and VIP tickets to the Lollapalooza festival on the condition they appear at the Hard Rock event, but they reportedly stayed in their rooms and racked up an $800 bill instead.

A source tells New York Post gossip column PageSix, “Jessica was invited and took Ed as her plus-one. They were flown first-class and given two rooms, and her talent wrangler, Aaron, agreed they would appear at night or at one of the day lounges. But they never showed up, and instead they hit the mini bar and ordered room service. The bill for food and booze for three nights was over $830.

“Publicists were calling their room and banging on their door. Eventually this blew up into a big argument on Sunday. … They left that night, and Jessica paid for everything.”

But reps for both stars have slammed the allegations, insisting the pair would have turned up to the event if they had known they were expected.

A spokesperson for Szohr says, “If Jessica had known, she would have gone. She was never told until Sunday, and as a result she agreed to pay for everything herself and left. There was no fight.”

Westwick’s rep adds, “Ed went as Jessica’s plus-one and had no idea about any agreement or photographs he had to take. He always honors any agreements.”

Kelly Brook got a nice fright during the production of the horror film “Piranha 3D,” but it had to do with the fuzz, not fanged fish. Brook tells us that during a break in filming, she and co-star Jessica Szohr decided to drive from the film’s set in Lake Havasu, Ariz., to Las Vegas for a little R&R, but ended up lost late at night at the Hoover Dam.

“The next thing I know, there are three police cars following us,” says the British Brook. “In England, the natural reaction is to get out of the car and ask for directions, which is what I did,” she explains. Unfortunately, she says, this prompted the cops to jump out of their squad cars with weapons drawn.

Brook, who bares all in the film, which opens Friday, and on the pages of this month’s Playboy, says: “Next thing you know, we have got our hands on the bonnet [hood] of the car and we’re trying to assure [the police] we’re just actresses on our way to Vegas.

“To have a gun pulled on you and then be asked for your autograph in the space of a minute is just a bizarre turn of events.” Yes, but we bet those cops went home happy.

Jessica Szohr was one of those people who, because of her less than amazing “Gossip Girl” character, wasn’t held in a high esteem by PopWrap. But then we met and it’s been adoration ever since. In fact, just as Vanessa had previously warped our opinion of Jessica, meeting the bubbly 25-year-old changed the way we viewed V. Suddenly her clothes weren’t as garish, her lines weren’t as cheesy and her behavior wasn’t as annoying.

This weekend Jessica trades Fendi for fish as one of the nubile spring break-ers “Piranha 3D’s” pack of carnivorous swimmers sets their sites on. But Jessica snagged the main female role of Kelly, so unlike the countless other scantily clad bimbos just itching to take their tops off, Jessica will probably live to see the end credits — and potentially a sequel.

Which may or may not be music to Jessica’s ears since she’s not a big fan of water in the first place. So why would someone who doesn’t care for H2O spend two months submerged in it? Why don’t I let her tell you.

PopWrap: What were your first thoughts when a script landed on your desk with the title “Piranha 3D?”
Jessica Szohr: At first I was like, “Oh ‘Piranha,’ they did it years ago,” but then they started telling me who else was attached and I watched some of the director’s other movies — his vision was very cool. Also, Kelly is a very different character than Vanessa, who I’ve been playing for three years now, so with all of those things I thought, “why not – let’s go have fun, get scared, be in the water and ride on a boat for two months.” [laughs]
